Manual Wheelchair Prescription for Independent Propulsion: Why it Matters and How to Do it
Poorly fitted manual wheelchairs cause problems for wheelchair users, especially those designed for people who independently propel. Inappropriate seat depth/width, slope, poorly positioned center of gravity, or improperly selected seat height adversely affects the wheelchair user’s function. This results in decreased independence and increased risk of developing repetitive stress injuries. This course will focus on why these measures are important and it will teach how to properly measure and fit clients for manual wheelchairs.

This session will include discussion with representatives from all manufacturers to provide solutions to common problems encountered during the molding process. Systems will be compared and contrasted to show solutions and out of the box thinking. Participants are asked to bring their frustrations and questions for discussion.

Tilt in Space: Who, What, When, Where, Why & How Much?
Tilt-in-Space mobility systems have been utilized for over 35 years for a wide variety of diagnosis and medical conditions. For all of those years of “experience”, there is relatively little published clinical evidence to justify the application. Case studies will be used to illustrate the clinical applications for all forms of tilted positioning and generate ideas to address unique circumstances. Recent published evidence and studies will be discussed.

Controlling Posture and Enhancing Function - Zones of Control
When providing seating support we need to look at the complete needs of the client, but we usually provide solutions in overlapping zones of support. Usually starting with the pelvis and the torso, head and upper extremities, then addressing the thighs, lower legs and feet. These zones of support require significantly different approaches, techniques and materials. This course will review the different support needs and explore the interaction between the zones of support.
